The CyberLAB application is designed to operate on an intranet, your facility's private computer network.
The CyberLAB system's WebGateway™ module can be used in an intranet or Internet environment.
Because your internal network is based on the same software and protocols as the Internet, your intranet has a familiar and consistent interface.
In fact, the interface between you, the user, and the intranet is a piece of software called the browser. The CyberLAB system requires the use of Internet Explorer as your browser.
The browser allows you to contact a server and send a request for information.
A server is a computer in a network that is used to provide services--like access files or route e-mails--to other computers on the network. A server can also deny access to other computers on the network. When the server receives the information, it then displays the information on your display device.
The browser functions the same way on the Internet. You enter the address of an Internet site, the browser contacts a computer at the Internet site, and the site home page with its information displays on your computer.
The intranet allows a facility's employees to communicate easily and to share information. This private, internal computer network is usually located at a facility's main site.
Security software and procedures control remote access to your facility's intranet and to the CyberLAB system. Authorized users can remotely access the CyberLAB system, via the Internet or intranet. All functions of the CyberLAB system can be accessed through the intranet, including an Aspyra module called WebGateway™.
Remote access can be configured over your facility's intranet or the Internet. The Internet is a global network that links computer networks all over the world by satellite and telephone.
Internet Explorer, the required browser for the CyberLAB system, is a graphical browser. This browser allows you to view images on your computer, "point-and-click" with a mouse to select hypertext links, and use drop-down menus and toolbar buttons to navigate and access resources on the Internet.
It is recommended that the browser settings match those described in the CyberLAB 7.2 System Requirements document.
To illustrate, the Internet Explorer browser is used to access the U.S. Census Bureau website. The browser, above, indicates the:
Name of the screen displayed on the top bar at left
Toolbar with the Back and Forward buttons
Address on the Internet of the U.S. Consensus Bureau
Help drop-down menu at top right
Hyperlink (underlined blue-colored text) to another location
For further information about hyperlinks and other links, see the Links and Quick Glossary topic.
